If you are new to TYPO3 it is recommended you have a look at the Getting Started Tutorial or the The official TYPO3 book if you need something more current to work with. You may also wish to check out a new book from Mark Stephenson, the leader of the Web Empowered Church (WEC) movement.
It is also recommended to use the Dummy package If you want to start out a fresh project take this package which offers an empty database with only a single admin user configured. You could also download the WEC Starter Package and begin using Typo3 with numerous templates and extensions geared towards online ministry. The Test-site package should be used for a learning tool along with the Getting Started Tutorial.
For administrators and developers TYPO3 Core APIs and Inside TYPO3 are good starting points.
